HEALTH CARE: Why does Medicaid cut you off when you are LAID OFF?

We live in Pennsylvania.

I worked at a low-paying job and my health coverage was through Medicaid.

When I was laid off, Medicaid CUT ME OFF.

I was laid off due to the slow economy. I was not fired.

Medicaid said my Unemployment Compensation was "over the limit" for "UNEARNED INCOME" even though it was less than my working paycheck.

I cannot understand this. To make matters worse, I DO need to see a doctor.

Sorry to hear about what's happening to you. Have you thought of going to a free clinic in your area? I think it was under the Quick Links section of this web site, under 'When the Pay Check Stops, that mentions some law about how some hospitals must provide treatment to the unisured, etc.

A Resource Guide to Low Cost or No-Cost Health Insurance Options in Pennsylvania was developed by The Pennsylvania Office of Rural Health In Partnership with Penn State Cooperative Extension to use in helping the uninsured to access health insurance options throughout the Commonwealth.

For an online application go to: http://www.compass.state.pa.us/d

For more information and a copy of the guide can be found here:

I hope this helps.

Have you thought about requesting a Department of Social Services hearing? I believe you might be able to download the form from your state's social service website. At least in Michigan, almost anyone who requests a hearing/appeal gets accepted. I wish you good luck.

The sad part about going to hospitals they want your acceptance/denial letter from medicaid, food stamp letter, and your 2009 tax return. Or my hospital does. I was there last week due to sickness, I didn't want to go but had no other alternative. 1099's from Unemployment and taxes show that I owe, so therefore I will file an extension. The hospital expects me to give them my return, well they are SOL because I've no money to pay IRS at this time. I've called numbers for these free clinics all around my area, because my town doesn't have one of the free clinics. They tell me the same thing, if you aren't living in that county they can't see you. So what does one do who needs a doctor and can't afford one??

It is known that cash makes us autonomous. But what to do if someone has no cash? The only one way is to receive the loan and financial loan.

no hospital can refuse treatment
