What's a temporarily unemployed 83-year-old man to do?
I am 83 years old and am a professor emeritus at Kent State University in Northeast Ohio. For the first time since 1975, I will not be teaching summer classes. The recession has decimated summer student enrollment in all fields of study.
I am in the process of applying for unemployment benefits. As one would expect from a government bureaucracy, the process is slow and requires a lot of paperwork. One of the requirements for unemployment benefits in Ohio is that I must prove I applied for two jobs per week. I'm doing that; however, I will be teaching again this fall. I'm just worried about paying bills for the next three months.
One of the problems I have is severe arthritis and the attendent mobility issues. I had one knee replaced last summer, and doing a lot of walking or standing is not feasible.
Do you have any suggestions as to what I should do, or are there any sources for temp work for someone of my age and limited mobility?
Sincerely,
Robert West
